Ah, toys. They’re a fond part of our childhoods (and if you’re like me, it’s seeping into your adulthood as well), they’re soft, cuddly, and good friends. I love all sort of toys–plushies, art toys, paper dolls, you name it. If it’s cute and makes me smile, you know that I’m on board.
Hello! My name is Jane and I’m the creator, designer, one person production team, of Janie XY. I began making toys when my niece was born and my boyfried, Sergio, and I were on a misson to find her toy she could grow up with. We searched high and low looking for something cute, soft, and classic but all we were left with were commercial toys inspired by popular children’s shows. It left me wondering, “What happened to all the cute stuffed animals?” Having never taken a sewing or pattern making lesson in my life, I thought long and hard about how to make my doodles into real and squishy 3D creations.
It must have been all the hours I logged in growing up watching my parents sew, but one morning, I woke up and just knew how to make a toy. My very first toy was Wilbur the Whale and after just 2 or 3 pattern adjustments, I had my first finalized toy down. Wilbur was a hit with my niece as she towed it around everywhere she went. A few toys later and tons of encouragement from friends and family, I opened up shop and decided to share my creations with the greater public.
I haven’t looked back since then, and the public’s response is overwhelming!
All toys are designed, cut, sewn, and stuffed by me (and when it gets busy, I employ the help of my loved ones–where would I be without them?) in North Hollywood, California.
